7 Quick Tips That Every Job Seeker Should Know

Happy Summer! It’s so hot outside, and I haven’t talked to yall in a minute! I hope that yall have been great, gaining certifications, completing those degrees, and leaving situations that no longer serve you!

Many of you are looking for new jobs in the same industry, changing industries completely, fresh out of school trying to land your first job, or don’t care what type of work you do as long as you are getting paid. No matter your situation, this blog post is for you!

Below are 7 quick tips that every job seeker should know.

1.       Social Media Matters- More and more companies are scouring social media to discover anything unfavorable that can help them weed you out of the running for a position. I don’t personally agree with this, but recruiters, hiring managers, ad HR managers have been known to do this. My advice: If you have questionable posts on your social media, delete them.

2.       Prior to an interview, research the people you will interview with. Research the interviewers, but do not add them on LinkedIn. Check out anything in their profile that relates to your experience. You can highlight this in the interview. People like to hire people they can relate to. Your experience is just important as your presence and the impression that you leave with the interviewers.

3.       Negotiate more than just salary- Once you get the offer, NEGOTIATE! Negotiate things like insurance and retirement benefits, PTO, career training, remote/hybrid work, and other benefits/perks.

4.       Do some interview prep! Especially if it’s been a minute since you have interviewed. Whether you practice with your boo, a friend, or me! DO IT!

5.       Spell check your resume, use past tense for all previous jobs, remove references available upon request off your resume, add your LinkedIn URL to the top under your name/contact info, and add some numerical achievements throughout your resume.

6.       Be mindful of ATS industry specific key words on your resume! ATS= applicant tracking system. ATS is a type of resume scanning software used by recruiters and employers during the hiring process to collect, sort, scan, and rank the job applications they receive for their open positions. Most employers use ATS to filter through resumes which means a system reviews your resume and IF the resume fits the requirements for the position ATS will send your resume to a human. ATS feeds off industry key words, so be sure to include those in your resume!

7.       Stop being scared to apply! Your resume is done and now you won’t apply?! I know it’s scary, and you are worried about rejection, but you will worry yourself out of a job if you don’t apply.
